How To Repair Motherboard No Power? Troubleshooting Problem Solve

by Perfect Tech Reviewer

Has your computer suddenly stopped working? Or the screen is showing no display? If that’s the case then we have to sadly inform you that your motherboard has stopped working! It is extremely frustrating when you have to work and the system is showing a blank screen. I know, it has triggered a wave of worry in you that the system is no more but the truth is you can fix the motherboard within seconds.

To fix the problem, first ensure that it is the motherboard that is not working. Check the socket, shoe plugs, and LED. Once you have confirmed, you can take a few measures to overcome it. First, you should know what is causing the problem.

Sometimes, the issue occurs because of low power, and other times the system turns off because of overheating. Well, it is not recommended to take the tools in your hand and start working on the motherboard if you do not have any prior experience.

You might cause more problems if you try to fix the problem alone. Actually, it has happened to my PC a lot of times in the past as I am a game enthusiast and understand motherboards well. Because of over-burden my system turned off and sometimes I casually switch my CPU on and it does not work. However, after searching a lot and experimenting with the tips I have gathered 3 tips for you. Let’s discuss them one by one.

Ways To Troubleshooting No Power Motherboard

1. Checking Power

The first step is to check the power, there are chances the motherboard is not working because of the PSU. Confirm that the power supply unit is connected to the motherboard. There are different power cables attached to the motherboard. Your duty is to ensure that the 24-pin ATX power cable and 4/8-pin cable of the CPU are properly connected to the system board.

When it first happened to me, I used a multimeter to check the voltage of the PSU. At times, the PSU does not provide the appropriate amount of voltage and as a result, the motherboard does not work. If you do not know how to use the multimeter, set the machine on DC voltage and attach the red probe to the yellow cable then attach black with any black color wire. If you see 11.4 V and 12.6 V on display, you are on the safe side.

2. Check The Memory

Uninstalled or half-installed memory can cause this problem. But you might say how is it possible that the memory suddenly comes out of the slot? It can occur, we do not notice but CPU affects the memory slot. If the memory like RAM is not installed properly, your motherboard will not work until you fix the problem. For this reason, you are required to loosen the screws of your CPU case.

Use a screwdriver and do not apply any force, if the CPU case has a clip-in attachment, then you can get rid of this problem sooner than others. However, loosen the screws and gather them in a place. Now check carefully that the memory is there in the slot properly. It is possible, your motherboard might have two RAM cards.

Well, all you need is to check that the memory is attached to the slots properly. Now give power to the motherboard, in case it does not turn on, remove one of the two RAM cards and repeat the process. Again if the problem remains unfixed, install the other RAM card and remove the present card and turn the power on. You should also know how to install the RAM card properly.

3. Checking The GPU

GPU is one of the main components of the main board. If the motherboard is not working, you should check whether the GPU is properly in its slot or not.

When I want to check that the GPU is functioning, I attach it to another system. If that system works with my GPU, it means the card is fine and the problem lies somewhere else. You can also do this for checking the GPU. Plus, check that the fans of the GPU are working accurately because it can also stop working in case it gets overheated.

Conclusion

Motherboard is a delicate machine, it possesses hundreds of tiny components. You cannot fix a motherboard without technological assistance. But you can try a few hacks in case your motherboard is not powering up. Such as checking the power supply, examining the power connector of the motherboard, and inspecting the power supplies with the help of a multimeter.

But sometimes, the power connection is fine but inside components like RAM and GPU cards are not accurately attached to their slots. Therefore, check out the memory and see carefully that the cards are properly attached with slots. Also, see the fan of the GPU because sometimes the fan does not work as it should and as a result, the GPU stops functioning and the motherboard does not power up. Consider all these tips and fix your motherboard within minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you fix a dead motherboard?

A motherboard is composed of large and tiny components which are sometimes invisible to the naked eye. You cannot change such components nor can you fix them without technological assistance. Plus, if a motherboard is dead, it remains useless no matter if you try to fix it for hours.

Why is my motherboard not powering up?

There could be multiple reasons, check that the power source is fine, and see if the power connectors of the motherboard are working. Examine the RAM functioning and GPU working by installing both cards in another device.

How do I know if my motherboard is fried?

The only way to find that your motherboard has fried is if it smells burnt. If you see smoke erupting in your computer case or feel like something is burning from the CPU, there are chances that the system board has fried.
